1. DISABLED CENTER NEPAL

First of all I thank you that got a chance to take part in training in Japan. I am feeling now days that training grew up my moral power.

Because of my problems, I am unable to sent the report in certain time, so I excuse with you. You know I am selected CA Member of Nepal Government with marginalized group (Persons with Disabilities). I am busy in these days for made constituency on favor of persons with disabilities. Actually Leadership Development of persons with disabilities training excited me to voice on rights of persons with disabilities.

2. Background

According to World Health Organization (WHO) persons with disabilities in developing countries are 8 to 10% and women with disabilities (WWDs) are about 6% in Nepal and most of them are living in remote areas, among them some are educated but still unemployment due to disabilities. The employment status of PWDs in Nepal is very difficult and denied. Many places including the capital city Kathmandu are not equipped with sufficient structures so that they are not disability friendly.

Disabled people are struggle in every sector even if they are qualified and skillful. In the case of WWDs, they are discriminated in every sector. Like: they are women, from family, with disabled and conservative society. If we success to search the job for a WWDs, it will be great achievement for us. They will be independent financially. The employment rate of PWDs in Nepal is very low. Disabled Peoples Organizations (DPOs) are struggling for the government, local NGOs and INGOs, Civil Society in these issues demanding reservation for PWDs employment.

The organization in which I have evolved is “The Disable Centre Nepal [DCN]”. It was established in April 2004 with aims of to address issues related with people living with physical, visual impairment and mental disability. Those women who are neglected by their families and their society have to face many challenges even to survive. Candle production programs on behalf of WWDs challenge in order to help them get out of poverty and become self-employ independently. From the training disable women increase their knowledge and they can do these work themselves. It will help to independent their life.

3. OVERALL GOALS

DCN's overall goal is to raise the economic and social status of deserted and jobless WWDs by producing candles under the direct supervision of DCN and our coordinator. During the one month training programme, WWDs will participate in social and economic activates and eventually strengthen the social and economic status of WWDs themselves. It will be the project of DCN's for WWDs struggle in their life and independent living. Eventually, DCN will become a huge social organization for the WWDs of their social rights, human rights and other related other functions. On the other hand DCN operate various programs for them. In near future DCN established branches in regional parts of Nepal for this movement.

4. CONCRETE OBJECTIVES

  1. According to JICA action plan, we trained 12 WWDs in candle making and gave them employment opportunities.
  2. From this training 6 disabled women independent economically and socially. At least 6 disabled WWDs benefited and can do these work in operate their livelihood.

Woman with Disabilities are the main beneficiaries of the program. Besides these, the woman who are in poor condition, marginalized group and deserted by family, society are the second beneficiaries of the program. DCN provide the first priority of WWDs and remain seats for other women.

6. IMPACT ON BENEFICIARIES

Step1: Training for 12 WWDs for 1 month

9. POSSIBLE OBSTACLES

  1. All 12 trainees who involved in this candle production project [CPP] were not fully educated. So it was difficult to train them in a short time.
  2. Raw materials to be used in producing candles were not available easily in the market.
  3. There was little support from ordinary people to implement this project. So DCN asked WWDs and other trains as volunteers who were interested in this training.

10. FUND FOR THE PROGRAM

DCN is one of the social organization for the movement and empowerment of WWDs and other Nepalese women. From the establishment, it doesn't take any financial support from national and international organization. We also operate this training from local resources. District Administration Office provides some fund for this training. We operate this training for this fund. We have difficult for the training because the fund is very small. We didn't provide any remuneration for the trainees like travel expenses and others.
