The Method how to guide the visually impaired- Practical learning prior to the training course, "Leaders of Persons with Disabilities"

Date and time: 15:30 - 17:30, September 15, 2005
Place: Auditorium, Seminar Room 11 and stairs in JICA Tokyo
Instructor: Shinobu Takahashi, Human Development Team, JICA Tokyo
The Number of Participants: 14 (from JSRPD, JICE, TBS, JICA tokyo, Volunteer, etc)

Programme

1. Basic Guiding Method
(at Auditorium and Lounge from 15:30 to 16:00)

* All the participants form a pair. They experience the two roles: the totally blind and the sighted for change

  1. One member of each pair wears eyemask and walk along the wall of the Auditorium, using the tactile sign available. the other member watches the partner.
  2. One with the eyemask walks along the line of the basket ball court. The sighted partner leads him/her through speech.
  3. The instructor shows the basic guiding method and each pair practises.

2. Walking up and down the stairs
(from 16:00 to 16:30)

* All the participants form a pair. They experience two roles: the totally blind and the sighted for change

  1. The instructor shows the basic guiding method in walking up and down the stairs and each pair practises. (at stairs between first and second floor of Main Building)
  2. b. Each pair practises guiding method at the curbing stairs. (at the stairs between first and second floor of Annex Building)

3. Introduction of other useful methods in guiding
(at Seminar Room 11 from 16:30 to 17:00)

  1. How to lead and show the visually impaired the seat.
  2. How to lead and show the door.
  3. Guiding method in walking narrow space.
  4. Explanation at the meal table.
  5. Questions and Answers.
